Are you tired of literary segregation?
I'm tired of going to labeled sections to look for great books. I usually read books by all authors. I could care less if the author is White, Asian, Black, Native American or Latino. If it's a good book and will hold my interest, I'll read the book. Every time I am in the book store, I have to go to special sections, in my bookstore, where they label according to race.'
We need diversity on the shelves in Romance and other subgenera. visibility is always a struggle for some authors of color. Every author deserves to reach wider audiences.
Publishers want what sells. Diverse books will sell if people will give them a try.
Why can't diversity be tried and true just like diverse music? Some radio stations will play music by every artist. At lease it's heard by everyone, and this lets a wider audience decide if they like the music or not and if they want to purchase it.
If the bookstores will just place all books in romance, or whatever subgenera, together and let the audience decide for themselves, we can have diversity in the book sections of the bookstores.
Shelving books under tags sends a message to readers that these books are not for them and sends them a signal to stay away.
Please, encourage your bookstore to remove the labels and to make all subgenera more accessible to all readers.
